Chipped Beef Dip

Chipped Beef Dip is an old-school, classic appetizer that is making a comeback! And rightfully so. It's absolutely delicious!

I have fond memories of enjoying this creamy dip as a kid at neighborhood gatherings, game day parties, and holiday family get-togethers.

This ultra decadent and savory dip is easy-to-make, comes together in the matter of minutes, and is bursting with flavors.

Chock-full of creamy cream cheese, tangy sour cream, salty pressed beef, savory Worcestershire, scallions, and zesty herbs; this truly is the perfect party snack.

Chipped Beef Dip Ingredients

  • cream cheese
  • sour cream
  • chipped beef
  • green onions
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • ranch seasoning

Cream Cheese – Feel free to use full fat, reduced fat, or fat free versions. Just be sure to let it soften close to room temperature so it mixes well with the sour cream.

Sour Cream – If you don't like sour cream you can also use plain yogurt. I like to use Greek yogurt as it's a little thicker and tangier which is great with the saltiness of the beef.

Chipped Beef – Also called dried beef, you can find it in the canned meat aisle in the grocery store (usually in a jar) or in the cold cut/bacon section. Just be sure to dice or chop it very fine so it mixes well. My favorite brand is Buddig Beef but Armour works well too!

Green Onions – Just trim and slice thin. I like to use just the green part but you can use the white too. Or if you prefer chives or parsley you can use that instead.

Ranch Seasoning – I like the extra flavor that ranch dressing mix has but you can also use a combination of garlic powder and onion powder.

How to make Dried Beef Dip

First: In a large bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, sour cream, Worcestershire, and ranch seasoning.

Second: Chop the dried beef and slice the green onions. Mix in the chopped dried beef and green onions. Stir to combine thoroughly. Chill before serving.

Third: Serve with your favorite crackers or vegetables. Enjoy!

What is Chipped Beef?

Chipped beef is beef that has been salted, pressed, dried, and thinly sliced. Often called dried beef, it can be found near the bacon or deli meats section of the grocer in flash sealed pouches.

If you cannot find it there, try looking near the canned tuna and chicken.

Traditionally, chipped beef has been used in dishes when fresh meat is unavailable for a convenient form of protein. Dried beef can be used in dips, stews, soups, and gravies.

It provides a strong savory beef flavor and is highly salty. Therefore, if using chipped beef in a recipe, be sure to reduce the amount of salt you add to ensure the dish doesn't become overly salty.

Can you make this a hot dip?

You can absolutely turn this into a hot dip. Just mix together and spoon into a baking dish. Bake at 350F for 10-15 minutes or until bubbly.

For more flavor and texture, top it with cracker crumbs or chopped pecans when baking.

Is it gluten free?

This dip is gluten free if made as is with the brands that I use. Just be sure to check all labels of the ingredients you use to be sure.

Is it Keto?

It is definitely low carb and keto! Yippee!

Can you freeze it?

I wouldn't recommend freezing this dip because the sour cream can separate.

How far in advance can I make it?

I love that you can make this dip up to 7 days in advance and keep in the fridge until ready to enjoy!

How to store leftover Chipped Beef Dip

If you happen to have leftovers, which we rarely do, you can keep it tightly covered in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Tapas Tips & Tricks

  • Be sure to let the cream cheese come close to room temperature so it is soft enough to mix with the sour cream.
  • I like to whip just the cream cheese with a hand mixer before adding the sour cream. Otherwise you could get some chunks of cream cheese that don't mix well.
  • Add in a little horseradish or diced pickled jalapeno for a little spice.
  • Feel free to serve this delicious dip hot or cold!
  • Serve this is your favorite crackers or raw veggies. It's also great on bagels in the morning!
  • I have added finely chopped green pepper to this dip for a little more freshness.
